Silk Sheets Sewn Together End Up as Successful Business Concept
DreamSacks, Inc. Founder and President Nancy Morgan was an educator in Ashland, Oregon, from1983 until 1999. During a two-year leave of absence, she taught at a college in Fuzhou, Fujian China, a sister province to Oregon. In between teaching, Morgan would travel throughout Asia. During these trips, she noticed that most of the accommodations had questionable sanitary standards, so prior to one trip to Asia, Morgan sewed sheets together to take with her and cover the
beds. The first set she made were big and bulky, but late she started making the sheets out of silk so they would be lighter, more compact and more comfortable.
When she returned to Oregon, Morgan began teaching again at the middle school but soon started communicating with factories in China about her concept for traveling silk sheets. After several months of exchanging ideas and negotiating pricing, Morgan received her first small order.
When people saw the silk sheets in a bag for the first time, most were impressed and wanted to purchase a set of their own. Soon, The Oregonian got wind of Morgan’s invention and one of the newspaper reporters wrote on article on camping that included information about DreamSacks. This was the big break Morgan had been waiting for.
An extensive article with a photo layout of her product soon appeared in Sunset magazine, and the company was formally launched. Today, DreamSacks employs eight people and its products appear in major airline publications and in catalogs such as Norm Thompson Solutions, LL Bean, TravelSmith, Frontgate, Soft Surroundings and many others. The company has major U.S. customers, but also sells its products successfully in Japan, Germany, Switzerland and Sweden. In addition, travel and backpacking outlets, boutiques and gift stores carry DreamSacks products, as do home and body care shops. ■
