The wonderful, frustrating game of golf first arrived in the Rogue Valley in October 1910, brought here by a group of wealthy men who had played the game in the east. Along with others from the area, they organized the Medford Golf and Country Club. In the following years, the club underwent many transformations, even changing locations, until it returned to its original site on Hillcrest Road with nine holes opening for play on May 3, 1924 as the “Rogue Valley Country Club.”

The organizers had selected Chandler Egan, a local orchardist and nationally recognized amateur golfer, as the golf course architect for the original nine holes. During the years between 1925 and 1927, Chandler Egan designed and supervised construction of RVCC’s second nine holes; bringing the course up to the quality standard envisioned at its start.

Twenty-five years later, golf architect Billy Bell made modifications. Then, in the early ’60s, nine more holes were created to expand the course to the present 27 holes. In 1983, Robert Muir Graves was selected to develop a long-term master plan that would assure RVCC’s desired status as a premier golf course. His recommended extensive improvements were implemented over the next decade and completed in 1994. In 2004, club members approved a $3.2 million investment to make the RVCC course truly great “…for the next century.”

Today, the club offers members and their guests 27 holes of challenging golf with rolling hills and picturesque views, complete practice facilities including two-tiered driving range with target greens, private teaching area, three putting greens, chipping green and two practice holes.

In 1994, the membership approved the construction of a new 35,000-square-foot clubhouse. The clubhouse provides a haven for the membership offering outstanding dining experiences in four distinct areas, including outdoor dining on the terrace with spectacular views. Additionally, private banquet facilities are available for non-members with seating capacity in the second floor Valley Ballroom exceeding 300 guests. A second terrace provides an outdoor venue that is popular for weddings and corporate events.

This year, the club will host the 77th Southern Oregon Golf Tournament. The tournament, which draws 416 golfers from all over the country, is recognized as the largest amateur match play golf tournament hosted on a single course in the United States. Encompassing eight days of competitive golf, festivities and social events, it is truly the crown jewel of amateur golf in the western states.

Steeped in history and tradition, RVCC strives to exceed the expectations of the members and their guests as the premier private country club in Southern Oregon by continually upgrading facilities, services and amenities. With that in mind, club leaders are driven by the club’s mission statement to “provide enjoyable, quality golf, recreational, social and leisure experiences for its members, their families and guests.” The outstanding facilities, fine dining experience and quality service provided by the staff ensure members and their guests that RVCC will continue to be successful into the next century.

Currently, a limited number of golf and social memberships are available at Rogue Valley Country Club.
