The Greenbrier Pleases Presidents, Royalty and Celebrities
Who would think that an award-winning, 6,500-acre estate that defines the word ‘grand’ would be found in West Virginia’s Allegheny Mountains in a town called White Sulphur Springs. But it’s true that 26 presidents, many members of the British royal family and a fleet of celebrities have stayed at The Greenbrier and confirmed that the place is fit for the fabulous.
The manor’s evolution began in the early 1700s when travelers heard of the medicinal miracles and healing powers of sulphur spings. By the mid-1800s, a cottage community had sprouted and the Old White Hotel was built to accommodate the increasing number of visitors.
The C & O Railroad purchased the cottages and hotel in 1910 and construction began on the central portion of today’s Greenbrier. During World War II, the railroad sold the property to the U.S. Army who renamed it Ashford General Hospital. After the war, C & O repurchased the property and hired renowned interior designer Dorothy Draper to completely redecorate The Greenbrier.
Today The Greenbrier is owned by CXS Corporation, headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida. The property offers 802 rooms, including 33 suites and 97 guest and estate houses. Credit for the lavish accommodations go to designer Carleton Varney, president of Dorothy Draper and Company, Inc. in New York.
The Greenbrier also has 10 lobbies, more than 40 meeting rooms and a complete conference center facility. Guests enjoy more than 50 recreational activities, including three championship golf courses, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, a 40,000-square-foot spa, and a wide variety of other amenities.
The Greenbrier’s awe-inspiring main lobby is big and bold. Decorated with antiques and historic paintings, bright colors and floral designs, the soaring ceilings and cozy fireplace make it the ideal place to enjoy an afternoon tea and concert. Like the guestrooms, Carleton Varney oversees all interior design of The Greenbrier’s main lobby.
There is a wide variety of food on the estate, with classical, continental and American cuisine being prepared by a team of chefs, many of whom were trained in The Greenbrier Culinary Apprenticeship Program. And, with 30-plus stores, visitors can shop in the hotel’s lower level.
The Greenbrier is a destination for conference, meetings and other group events, with accommodations for up to 1,200 people. The estate has about 95,000 square feet of flexible, state-of-the-art meeting areas and more than 40 meeting rooms and event venues.
Located just off Interstate 64, The Greenbrier is easily accessible from most major cities by air, auto or train. Its classic architecture, exquisite interior design, carefully sculpted landscape, impeccable service and outstanding amenities continues to draw the affluent from near and far.
